Coat of Many Colors

Acrylic paint on 16×20 canvas panel

Genesis 37 starts the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors. After painting a portrait of my goddaughter’s daughter, dressed in a colorful crocheted coat, I named the painting after the coat. Knowing the story of Joseph’s hardship because of the beautiful coat, I wanted to focus on the ending of the story when Joseph forgives his brothers. Verse Genesis 50 verse 20 paraphrased says, “What you intended for evil, God will use for good.” This statement occurs after Joseph’s brothers threw him into a deep pit because they envied his colorful coat that their father had given him. Also, they hated Joseph for telling of his dreams of grandeur.

Though Joseph’s struggles were unbearable, his morals, exhibiting excellent work ethics and willingness to do the right thing propelled him toward greatness. Using his God-given gift of seeing into the future, saving the Egyptians from famine, he became next-in-command to the pharaoh of Egypt. Sometimes horrible things happen to us that we can’t explain. We can’t control or stop it from happening. All we can do is control ourselves to do what is right. If you are being bullied, talk to your parents or a trusted adult or person at school or a close friend. If you have faith, include it. You are not alone. Don’t try to work it out alone. Just remember, your character and faith will give you the courage to stand like Joseph. Sometimes the reasons for pain is a test to uncover your inner strength.
